Mental health days are widely supported in principle and underused in practice. Most UK employers' sickness policies allow days off for mental health, but stigma and presenteeism culture keep people working through situations that warrant rest. Taking them anyway is a key wellbeing skill.
When to take one
Multiple weeks of poor sleep. Tearfulness in normal situations. Inability to focus on tasks you normally handle easily. Coming home each evening with nothing left for family. Recurrent stress symptoms (headaches, GI issues, panic).
How to take one without escalation
Email manager: 'I'm unwell today and won't be in.' Standard sick day language. No detailed explanation required. Most managers don't need the reason. If asked, 'I'm not well; resting today' is sufficient.
Mental health days work as prevention. Used at the right moments, they prevent the longer absences that burnout produces. Don't wait until you're past the point of recovery in a single day.
