Most adults engage with mental health only during crisis. Preventive care — therapy, lifestyle, support systems — is cheaper, easier, and more effective at preventing crises than crisis-driven care is at recovering from them.
What preventive mental health care looks like
Periodic therapy when life is stable (6-12 sessions every few years). Maintaining sleep, exercise, social, nutritional fundamentals. Stress management practices. Friends and family who can notice patterns before you do.
Why most don't engage preventively
Cost feels unjustified when not in crisis. Stigma persists. 'I don't need it' is true until suddenly it isn't.
Treat mental health like dental health: maintain even when nothing is acutely wrong. The maintenance prevents the crises that are much harder to manage.
