Crying is biological release — emotional tears contain stress hormones being eliminated, parasympathetic activation, oxytocin release. Adult life often suppresses crying ('don't be emotional'). Allowing tears when they come produces measurable mood improvement.
Where this is countercultural
Workplaces (some still actively penalise tears). Some family cultures. With certain friend groups where stoicism is valued. The penalty often imagined more than real.
What allowing crying looks like
Don't fight it when emotions rise. Find a private space if context inappropriate. Don't apologise excessively afterwards. Notice the emotional shift that follows.
Most adults cry less than would be physiologically helpful. Letting it happen as it comes — without forcing or suppressing — supports mental health more than the cultural advice suggests.
